Likely bacterial-pattern conjunctivitis
Sticky yellow/white discharge with eyelids stuck on waking is the classic bacterial pattern. Most cases still settle on their own with hygiene and comfort measures.
Keep the eye clean: wipe from the inner corner outwards with a fresh cotton pad and cool boiled (then cooled) water, several times a day. Lubricating drops ease grittiness. If it hasn't clearly improved after 3–5 days, or if you wear contact lenses, ask a pharmacist whether antibiotic eye drops (e.g. chloramphenicol, where available OTC) are appropriate.
Important
- • Do not share towels, pillows or makeup while symptoms last.
- • If you wear contact lenses, stop wearing them and see a pharmacist before restarting.
- • Seek same-day assessment if vision changes, pain develops, or light sensitivity begins.
